What is it about being told what book to read?

I love to read, I mean really love to read. I can get a book and not want to do one other thing but read. No food for my family, reading at stop lights, you name it I will sacrifice it to read a good book. So this is my question, why when I have to read a book for book club can I just not get into it? It's like I'm back in school and a teacher is telling me what I have to read, so I, out of rebellion, just would not read it. I'm sure that these are great books my friends have picked, but I have yet to get into one that I have wanted to read. I'm going to keep trying, but if I can't find one I like soon, I will just have to go for the fun of being with good friends and stick with reading other things. I didn't even go to book club last night because I was home in my jamies reading a good book.

It's kind of the opposite with me. I have to be told what books are good because I just have no clue on what to read. So we should just tell you to not read the books on the book club list and then maybe you will read them because YOU WANT TO.

If you like a serious non-fiction read, then do read Three Cups of Tea for next month's book club. Oh no! I went and ruined it by telling you to read it. Never mind. Don't read it. I dare you to not read it. But, you should come liven up the party anyways.

I KNOW!!! I am totally the same way! When I was in a book club I hardly ever actually read the books. It was totally like school. I would read "just enough" to know what they were talking about and then fake my way through the conversation - much like a book report in high school. Funny!!

ok I'm mad at you now. I was looking around the room last night wondering where you were.
You are the life of the party. Who cares if you read the book, you better come next time. YOu missed out. :)

I'm just the opposite like Jewels. I'm constantly writing down all the great books you talk about so I'll have something worthwhile to read. I can't believe you didn't just come and hang out with us. You totally missed out on a fun night of great laughs. I hope you come next time. We missed you :(

We'll forgive you for missing this month, but just come next time!

Also, I LOVE YOU! My treat on the porch this morning had me smiling from ear to ear!!!

OK--this speaks to something much larger than just books and/or just being told which ones to read--to me anyway. It's about I get to choose to do-be-feel-say what I want or love and the world does not fall apart if it's an unpopular choice.

Now I'm a bit nervous. I just joined a book club because I thought you LOVED yours....now I'm having second thoughts :)
